How do you build a seven-storey construction with a jointless façade and outstanding environment credentials quickly, economically and in compliance with the Swiss Minergie P-ECO standard? The new Kalkbreite residential and office building in the heart of Zurich shows how it can be done. This forwardlooking building was constructed as a hybrid structure consisting of a concrete frame with prefabricated façade modules. A new, contemporary, seven-storey residential and commercial building is currently being constructed in compliance with the Swiss Minergie P-ECO standard at the Kalkbreite site in Zurich city centre. The aim of the Kalkbreite building association is to integrate this extremely ecological, energy-efficient construction into the city‘s architectural and social structure and develop it into a vibrant living and meeting place. The structure has been erected using hybrid construction techniques with a concrete frame and timber frame wall modules comprising 60 millimetre thick PAVATEX DIFFUTHERM fibreboards. And these provide much more than optimized protection against the cold, the heat of summer and annoying sound waves.

“We chose PAVATEX because the PAVATEX wood fibre insulation boards minimize the building‘s energy consumption and are made of high-quality, ecologically unrivalled natural products that help achieve the Minergie P-Eco standard,” explains Manuel Knuchel of the Kalkbreite building association. “However, the service and advice we received from PAVATEX were also crucial – as was the fact that with PAVATEX DIFFUTHERM, we were fully able to comply with all current fire protection regulations.

”Fire protection regulations are no problem for PAVATEX DIFFUTHERM. This is because façades constructed using these wood fibre insulating boards meet the strict Swiss fire safety objectives. As the corresponding certificates and fire protection tests prove. As a result, PAVATEX is currently the only manufacturer of composite wood fibre insulation systems that actually make it possible to implement fire protection requirements in practice.

In March 2013, the installation of the 500 PAVATEX DIFFUTHERM elements, which had been prefabricated by Baltensperger AG in Seuzach (Switzerland), got underway in Kalkbreite. “The modular construction is particularly fast and efficient,” explains Stefan Huber of PAVATEX. “What is more, it permitted a particularly slim wall construction – in particular because the PAVATEX DIFFUTHERM elements simultaneously acted as render carrier boards.” Additional structures and layers of formwork are therefore unnecessary.

The special “composition” or “structure” of PAVATEX DIFFUTHERM makes it the ideal render carrier board for vapour-permeable mineral render systems. Many renowned render manufacturers have approved and guaranteed this External Thermal Insulation Composite System (ETICS) for system use – for example, Greotol AG in Otelfingen (Switzerland) which supplied the render system. “The purely mineral structure of the render constitutes an ecological, vapour-permeable system that is perfectly suited to the existing wall construction,” explains René Kurmann of Greutol AG. What is more, it is perfect for achieving the desired jointless façade appearance.

Because it is made from wood fibre boards of different density, PAVATEX DIFFUTHERM achieves the optimum blend of stability and tension equalization. As a result, PAVATEX DIFFUTHERM can help prevent tension in the render layer from leading to unacceptable cracks. This property has made it possible to construct the building at Kalkbreite with a single, jointless façade. The result: unbroken protection against cold, heat, noise and fire hazards.

PAVATEX DIFFUTHERM also boasts another advantage: a vapour-permeable structure. The wood fibre insulation boards can absorb any moisture that arises and transport it away to the outside of the building. This results in a particularly harmonious and healthy indoor climate - whatever moisture arises in the living space, for example due to showers, cooking or respiration. This vapour-permeable structure also prevents damage to the building as a result of mould and dampness.
