Efficient roof renovation with the reliable PAVATEX system solution

Particularly energy-efficient insulation coupled with effective protection against cold, heat, noise and fire hazards – these were the requirements specified for the roof renovation of an historic residential and commercial building in the center of St. Gallen. The PAVATEX vapour permeable roof renovation system proved more than capable of rising to the challenge. It comprises PAVAFLEX flexible wood fibre insulation material, PAVATEX LDB 0.02 highly vapour permeable airtightness membrane and PAVATHERM-PLUS or ISOLAIR wood fibre insulation boards, in addition to other PAVATEX system components. This perfectly harmonized system for renovation work is extremely economical and efficient, as the elements can be installed quickly, easily and reliably.

The appearance of St. Gallen, in the North-Eastern part of Switzerland, is characterized not only by modern residential and commercial buildings, but also by many historical constructions. Among these is the seven-floor building on the Unterstrasse which dates back to 1904. The roof area of the building, which stretches over two floors, has undergone a full renovation while repair work was carried out on the façade. The objective was to create a modern, multifunctional roof structure that offered efficient all-round protection against both cold and summer heat, as well as against intrusive noise and fire hazards. What’s more, the roof renovation also had to provide extremely good insulation properties with a view to enhancing energy efficiency.

Economical and efficient roof renovation solution

The PAVATEX roof renovation system satisfied all these requirements. It consists of the flexible wood fibre insulation material PAVAFLEX and the PAVATEX LDB 0.02 airtightness membrane. At the top, the renovation system is completed by the vapour permeable PAVATEX PAVATHERM-PLUS or ISOLAIR wood fibre insulation boards. This combination helps to achieve a vapour-open roof build-up that regulates the humidity throughout the structure. At the same time, its large thermal storage capacity offers great protection against summer overheating. A U-Value of under 0.2 W/m•K was achieved in the roof area of the present property following the renovation – an outstanding figure that helps reduce heating costs significantly in the long term and thus also plays a valuable role in climate and environmental protection.

Windproof and airtight system that can be exposed to the weather

First the existing roof structure was torn down to the rafters. The gaps between the rafters were then insulated with PAVAFLEX. The PAVATEX LDB 0.02 airtightness membrane linstalled directly over the entire rafter area ensures a permanently windproof and airtight finish. This membrane also satisfies requirements in terms of waterproofing and immediate protection. If mechanically fixed, the airtightness membrane can be exposed to the elements for up to seven days. All openings, such as rooflight windows or vent pipes, were sealed using the adhesive tapes that form part of the PAVATEX system. 60-mm thick PAVATHERM-PLUS insulation boards rounded off the work. Thanks to these combination boards that consist of additional insulation and sarking board, the entire system can be left exposed to the weather for up to three months (in accordance with the Swiss Building Standard SIA 232). The great benefit: following an inspection, existing old insulation material can usually be left in situ, thus eliminating the time-consuming and costly stripping out and disposal. Next the counter battens and tile battens were fixed in the usual way.

Keeping humidity under control

“We opted for the PAVATEX roof renovation system as a quick, easy and reliable way to achieve high-quality, multifunctional insulation of the roof area,” explains Philipp Müri, Head of the Pitched Roof Division at Merz + Egger AG in St. Gallen. “The selected roof build-up is suitable for insulation without an additional vapour barrier, whose absolute impermeability would always be very difficult to achieve in the case of roof renovations from the outside. The PAVATEX airtightness membrane and PAVATEX insulation boards satisfy all the construction-related requirements: they ensure optimum moisture protection, combat thermal bridges effectively and provide efficient insulation throughout.”

Proven safety thanks to the PAVATEX system guarantee

“With this roof renovation system, PAVATEX offers a perfectly harmonized system for external renovation and supplies all the necessary components itself,” explains Marcel Satz from PAVATEX. “This creates confidence in the system and leads to satisfied customers who can rely completely on PAVATEX even when implementing technically demanding solutions, thanks to the PAVATEX system guarantee.” This is because PAVATEX offers the associated binding and adhesive components in addition to the components for the roof system. These ensure the lasting effectiveness of modern, multifunctional building envelope solutions – guaranteed by the PAVATEX system warranty.

New roof structure with genuine added value

Thanks to the PAVATEX roof renovation system, the entire roof area was fitted with a modern, efficient roof structure in a matter of months. It offers extensive protection against cold, heat, noise and fire hazards, as well as helping to reduce energy costs. At the same time, the vapour-open PAVATEX system contributes to a particularly pleasant and harmonious indoor climate. Thanks to the quick installation, the renovation was able to be completed within the tight time and cost constraints. Thus the roof renovation system offers an unparalleled combination of functionality, efficiency and reliability – as an effective solution that provides a particularly high degree of practical utility.
